Upper Back Pain

If you're experiencing upper back pain as a result of an auto or industrial accident, or if you just don't know what the cause of your upper back pain is, know that chiropractic care can be a great way to get out of pain and heal the problems that are causing you pain. While chiropractic care can be pursued on its own, it can also be used in conjunction with a lot of other traditional and non-traditional medical treatments. We at Mitchell L. Kaplan, DC, serving Melbourne, FL, know a lot about upper back pain.

What Causes Upper Back Pain?

Upper back pain is usually caused when the muscles of the neck, shoulder, and upper back get knocked out of their normal, healthy positions. This causes them to move to other parts of the body, which can also cause them to become inflamed. This inflammation causes the muscles to swell. Between the swelling and being out of their normal positions, the muscles put a lot of pressure on the nerves around them. These nerves then send pain signals to the brain.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

There are essentially two ways to get this pain to stop. Traditional medicine prescribes pain killing drugs that essentially numb the nerves or interfere with the pain signal they are sending to the brain. Unfortunately, there can be a lot of side effects that go along with many of these drugs. The second option is to move the muscles back into their proper and healthy positions.

In order to move the muscles, our chiropractor will perform a series of small movements that will move the muscles by a small amount to help get them back to their normal position. In many cases, a total course of treatment may take several weeks, but it is possible to start feeling some pain relief as soon as the first appointment is over.

It's important to know that each chiropractor adjustment will only move muscles, never bones. The small adjustments will work to reduce pressure on the surrounding nerves, but muscles are slow to stay in their proper positions. While there will be some pain relief after an appointment, it is possible that the muscles will become inflamed again after they adjust to being in a new location, causing a patient to feel pain again.
